A new beginning ....

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter of my life... 7 July 2008. All thanks to my dear friend, Iv who encourgaged me to join this cyberspace by having my own blog. Blogging is very new to me and i have yet to figure out what to do and how to do it...but thank God i have 2 dear blogger friends who can help me out, so Iv & G, i am counting on you guys!!!! Life in the big city has more than often weigh a person down to an extent that one feels bored and meaningless to be going through the same viscious cycle each and everyday. To most of the city folks, life often revolves around getting up and going through the jam to get to work and back from work. And weekend is normally spent at the shopping mall. Is this life? I'm sure there are more things to do to bring meaning into city folks' life...

I grew up in a small town and holidays to me meant real fun as i get to go back to my maternal grandma's house in a kampung to stay. Kampung life is slower even when compared to that of a small town. I have lots of cousins, nephews and nieces (who are quite closed to my age group) staying in my ah mah's house and friends include those renting house next to ah mah's. Back then, they were like closed-knitted community where everyone knows just about everyone.

I would normally stay in my aunty's house which is next to ah mah's house and she would wake me up early in the morning to take me to the market which was just 5 minutes walk away and to the kopi tiam to buy "karena" roti to eat with kao kao (thick) kopi . Sometimes she would take me to the "chai tiam ma" (sundry shop) to buy sweets for me. Yummy!!! I called her "ah mak" which means mother, as she is the godmother of my sister and since i have no godmother, i "adopted" her as my godmother. Ah mak was a great cook, too bad i was too young to learn one or two of her culinary skill. If not, i won't only be a great maggi mee chef now...

In the quiet afternoon, laughter could be heard just about every corner of the house. We would be skipping rope, playing police & thief (兵捉賊), river crossing (過河) in the big big compound. Hide and seek was fun as there were lots of places to hide and nobody could find you.... and at night, everyone would crowd around the swings outside the house and chit chat till the cow came home...

After ah mah passed away and ah mak's sudden death, my relatives, one after another moved out of the kampung to stay in the small town. In the end, ah mah's big house was sold to make way for "new development", so they said.

I miss my ah mah, i miss my ah mak and i miss the kampung life... This blog is a new beginning for me; a new beginning to reminiscent the past in cyberspace, hopefully before my ill memory robs me of my childhood and other memories....
