I grew up in a small town and holidays to me meant real fun as i get to go back to my maternal grandma's house in a kampung to stay. Kampung life is slower even when compared to that of a small town. I have lots of cousins, nephews and nieces (who are quite closed to my age group) staying in my ah mah's house and friends include those renting house next to ah mah's. Back then, they were like closed-knitted community where everyone knows just about everyone.
I would normally stay in my aunty's house which is next to ah mah's house and she would wake me up early in the morning to take me to the market which was just 5 minutes walk away and to the kopi tiam to buy "karena" roti to eat with kao kao (thick) kopi . Sometimes she would take me to the "chai tiam ma" (sundry shop) to buy sweets for me. Yummy!!! I called her "ah mak" which means mother, as she is the godmother of my sister and since i have no godmother, i "adopted" her as my godmother. Ah mak was a great cook, too bad i was too young to learn one or two of her culinary skill. If not, i won't only be a great maggi mee chef now...
In the quiet afternoon, laughter could be heard just about every corner of the house. We would be skipping rope, playing police & thief (兵捉賊), river crossing (過河) in the big big compound. Hide and seek was fun as there were lots of places to hide and nobody could find you.... and at night, everyone would crowd around the swings outside the house and chit chat till the cow came home...
After ah mah passed away and ah mak's sudden death, my relatives, one after another moved out of the kampung to stay in the small town. In the end, ah mah's big house was sold to make way for "new development", so they said.
